Understanding adjustment and performance in extreme environments
Join the University of Northampton on the 10 June for their lunchtime seminar Understanding adjustment and performance in extreme environments: The role of psychological factors
The event is hosted by the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Northampton, and they are delighted to announce that Professor Gro Sandal from the University of Bergen in Norway will be joining them to present research on preparing humans for long-duration space missions.
Much of Gro's career has been devoted to understanding human performance in extreme and unusual environment settings. As part of this research, Gro has worked closely with the European Space Agency and was on the selection committee for the most recent cohort of ESA astronauts. She was also Principal Investigator on the Mars500 project, which involved 6 crew members living and working together in a simulated space capsule for 520 days. Related to her interests in extreme environments, Gro has published research on astronauts, military personnel, Antarctic overwinterers, submarine operators and aviators.
Following Gro's presentation, Dr Nathan Smith will discuss research related to the post-expedition transition. Based on recently published research, Nathan will talk about the benefits and challenges associated with undertaking expeditions in stressful environments. Nathan's talk will be accompanied by some personal insights of transitioning back from a short expedition to Antarctica.
