Off to a flying start!
The Free Flight Physiology Project’s Karakorum study has got off to a flying start this month, thanks to SEARCH Project Athletes Tom de Dorlodot and Horacio Llorens.
One flight of their expedition saw Tom fly a paraglider from 3800m to 7457m and back down over three and a half hours. It was a personal record for Tom, and just 150m short of the world best. The last six minutes of his climb were wholly in cloud, with Tom relying on instruments and intuition to steer clear of the enormous mountains around him.
The team completed ten flights above 6000m during the expedition wearing the Free Flight Physiology telemetry. They were able to record physiological and accelerometric data in a unique and fascinating environment. Data will be analysed over the coming months and, in combination with studies at lower altitudes, will provide a new understanding of the physiology of paragliding.
